Critical care

The critical care service (CCS) is a dynamic 24 hours a day, seven days a week proactive service which provides elective and emergency care to patients suffering from or identified as being at risk of critical illness.

Services provided

As well as providing critical care for the local population, CCS plays a fundamental role in the event of a major incident or pandemic. 

The critical care services at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust include: 

  • Critical care unit 
  • Post anaesthetic care unit (PACU)
  • Education and outreach 
  • Rehabilitation
  • Research and audit

Patient information

Visiting

Under normal circumstances we allow two visitors at the bedside at a time. Child visitors may be accommodated at the discretion of the nurse in-charge, however they need to have careful preparation as young visitors may be very frightened by the critical care environment.

Visitors are often asked to leave the patient's bedside while we carry out ward rounds, examinations, procedures or treatments. During such times we have a relatives room which you are welcome to use.
