We're hosting an endoscopy open day - Saturday, 11 June 2022

Our endoscopy team are opening their doors to give potential employees an opportunity to find out what it’s like to work in a hospital endoscopy department.

The team, based at West Suffolk Hospital, are running an informal open day on Saturday, 11 June, between 10am and 1pm. Those interested can pop in to meet the team and find out about the life-changing work they do and the services they provide patients from across the county.

An endoscopy is a test to look inside a person’s body; a long thin tube with a small camera inside, called an endoscope, is passed into the body through a natural opening such as the mouth. There are different types of endoscopy that look at different parts of the body.

On the day, visitors can meet the team, watch demonstrations of endoscopy procedures as well as getting a guided tour of the department. The aim of the open day is to introduce the public to a wide range of roles available in the endoscopy department as well as the training and career progression opportunities that come with it.

Many endoscopy staff at the Trust have grown their career within the department; developing their skills and roles as they progress. Archie Libero is one of those people – the staff nurse came to the UK from the Philippines but although she had completed her nursing degree, she wasn’t able to get the post-registration experience she needed to finalise her qualification.

Archie said: “I continued to work in healthcare. I worked in a dementia care home as a carer, then a team leader for three years until I got a job in West Suffolk Hospital endoscopy unit as a senior endoscopy assistant.

“The education team in the Trust and my manager supported me to become a UK registered nurse. Eventually, I was able to qualify for a two-year nursing degree apprenticeship programme.

“The nursing profession is extremely rewarding, knowing that we are making a difference to people’s lives. It was a very long process but the experience, skills and knowledge I have gained through the years has been invaluable to me in providing the best quality and safest care for my patients.”

The open day takes place on Saturday, 11 June between 10am and 1pm in the endoscopy unit on the ground floor of West Suffolk Hospital.
