A sweet prescription: celebrating NHS 75

With our NHS turning 75 today, such an occasion wouldn’t be without a sweet treat.

As such, West Suffolk Hospital’s award-winning catering department were given a task by NHS England to create a cake to match the occasion after two members of the team placed sixth in the NHS Chef competition earlier this year.

Charlotte Crack, assistant head chef, mentored apprentice chefs Connor Gutsell and Harry Sandy through the process of developing the showstopping cake.

Weighing 8.3 kilograms – or 1 stone 3 pounds – the cake consists of a traditional Victoria sponge filling of raspberry jam and vanilla buttercream and handmade medical-style butter icing decorations.

Taking weeks of planning and 10 hours to create, the cake will be displayed in West Suffolk Hospital’s Time Out restaurant before being enjoyed by staff, as they take part in the celebratory NHS Big Tea.

Commenting on the team’s creation, head chef, Luke Nobbs, said: “It was such an honour that the team were specifically tasked by NHS England with creating a cake for this occasion. It was a fantastic experience for the team and it’s great to be able to showcase what we can do outside of our everyday roles of providing tasty and nutritious meals to 400 patients, three times a day and feeding up to 500 staff and visitors daily in our restaurant.”
