Orthopaedics

Orthopaedics is a branch of medicine that focuses on the care of the musculoskeletal system. This system is made up of muscles and bones as well as joint ligaments and tendons.

Services provided

At West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust we provide a comprehensive trauma(injury) and orthopaedic service to the population of West Suffolk, South Norfolk and East Cambridgeshire area.

Trauma service for patients suffering a traumatic orthopaedic injury. This service is consultant delivered and takes the form of responding to the emergency department, outpatient clinics, inpatient and day case surgery.

Elective orthopaedic service which involve outpatient consultations for a range of sub specialties. Elective surgery is offered on both an inpatient or day case basis, as appropriate.

We have 13 orthopaedic consultant surgeons, who all have extensive knowledge in trauma and orthopaedic including sub-speciality interests include the following:

  • Shoulders
  • Hand/Wrists
  • Elbows
  • Hips and Knees
  • Foot/ankle
  • Paediatrics
  • Orthopaedic Trauma

We work collaboratively as a multi-disciplinary team, involving specialist trainees, orthopaedic practitioners, specialist nurses, junior doctors, therapists, pharmacists and other professionals. We also pride ourselves by working in partnership with the wider community teams (such as GP’s, AHP).

We have an elective orthopaedic ward with 32 patient beds and a trauma ward comprising of 34 patient beds.

A proud achievement from The National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) rated West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (WSFT) as the top hospital in England, Wales and Northern Ireland for meeting best practice criteria for patients treated for a hip fracture in 2020. 

Musculoskeletal (MSK) Physiotherapy is provided across Suffolk by Allied Health Professionals Suffolk CIC (AHPS) who work in alliance with West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. AHPS work in community health care sites across the county and work together with GPs and Consultants from local hospitals to develop care pathways that work for our populations. Their website has a range of self-help resources regarding MSK and pelvic health conditions and you can self-refer to receive physiotherapy treatment.
