Services we provide

Our inpatient cancer ward, G1, has twelve single rooms, each with an ensuite shower, toilet, window and flat-screen TV.

There is also a communal day room that opens onto a courtyard for patients and families to enjoy.

Specialist nurses are available on the ward Monday to Friday, and doctors and consultants carry out daily ward rounds to keep you updated on your care.

You may also see a range of Allied Health Professionals during your stay, including physiotherapists, speech and language therapists and dietitians. They work closely with the medical team to provide holistic care and support.

A pharmacist visits the ward every day to review your medicines and discuss any changes before you go home.

During busy periods, you may be cared for on another ward. If so, please be reassured that your consultant team will continue to lead and coordinate your treatment.

Where to find us

Ward G1 is on the ground floor of West Suffolk Hospital, near the pharmacy.

There are parking spaces available outside the Macmillan Unit for patients receiving treatment.

Visiting times

Visiting times are 2pm to 8pm.

You may have up to two visitors at your bedside at any one time.

We are not able to accommodate visitors under the age of 12, except in exceptional circumstances. If this applies to you, please speak to your nurse.

At times, we may ask visitors to wear a mask to help protect you and other patients.

In some situations, the ward manager or nurse in charge may agree to visiting outside the usual hours. Please ask the team in advance.

Please do not visit a patient if you are feeling unwell or have any virus symptoms such as a high temperature, sore throat, diarrhoea or vomiting.

Going home

When you are ready to go home, a member of the pharmacy team will talk to you about any medicines you need to take with you. Preparing these medicines can take some time, so you may be asked to wait in the discharge waiting area while they are processed.

Please tell us if you need hospital transport or if a family member or friend will be collecting you.

Once your discharge is confirmed, we will ask you to move to the discharge waiting area. This helps us prepare beds for patients who need to be admitted.

Before you leave, we would be grateful if you could complete a patient satisfaction survey to help us improve our services. If you have not received one, please ask a member of staff.
