Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) at West Suffolk Hospital helps people get urgent care without having to stay in hospital overnight. Patients are checked, tested and treated on the same day so they can go home instead of staying in a hospital bed.

What happens at SDEC
You may be sent to SDEC by the emergency department, your GP, the ambulance service, a hospital ward, an outpatient clinic or another healthcare service. When you arrive, please tell reception you are here.
What to expect
Below is what usually happens in SDEC:
Arrival
When you arrive, please check in at reception.
Assessment
A member of our healthcare team will see you first. They will check what care you need and what tests might help.
Tests and checks
Next, we will do any tests you need. This could be checking your blood pressure, taking blood tests, doing X-rays or scans. We will start these as soon as possible.
Review
After your tests, a healthcare professional will look at the results and decide on the best treatment for you.
More tests or senior advice
Sometimes we may need to do more tests or ask a specialist for advice to help decide the best care for you.
Going home or staying in hospital
We always try to help you go home the same day with a plan for your care. If you do need to stay in hospital, we will arrange a bed for you as soon as possible.
