Occupational therapy (adult services)

Occupational therapy supports individuals to regain independence and improve their quality of life following injury, illness, or changes in ability.

Through personalised assessments and interventions, the service helps people participate in everyday activities that are meaningful to them, promoting recovery and confidence in daily living.

Services we provide

In hospital (inpatients)

As an inpatient, you may be seen by an occupational therapist to help with your recovery and to assist your discharge from hospital. The type and frequency of occupational therapy intervention will depend on your condition and the assessment outcome of the occupational therapist.

Should your assessment identify that essential equipment is needed to enable a safe discharge, we will enquire if your designated next of kin, or suitable person recommended by you, could collect these from the hospital. Alternatively, equipment can be arranged for home delivery if needed.

On occasions, a community referral for therapy, adaptations or other services may be required. Your occupational therapist will identify these with you before you return home.

Outpatient appointments

The outpatient service within occupational therapy involves the orthopaedic pre assessment clinic for some patients who are waiting for joint replacements, such as hip and knee replacements. We also treat people who have sustained a hand injury, or who have painful joints in their hands or wrists. Depending on your assessment and treatment plan, we may provide fabricated or customised hand splints to rest joints or facilitate function.

To be seen by an occupational therapist as an outpatient for the hand therapy service, you will need referral from your GP or consultant.
