Diabetes

Our expert team works to provide a professional and individualised service to our patients. Together we offer dietary advice, medication management and advice, foot-care management and advice as well as pre-surgery/procedure advice to help people look after their diabetes as best they can and prevent the long-term health problems that can develop.

Services provided

Education is the cornerstone to diabetes care and is offered to patients and professionals both in their GP surgery and in the hospital. This is offered on an individual basis or in groups.

  • DESMOND (nationally approved education programme for those newly diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes)
  • DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating - nationally approved education for those with Type 1 diabetes)
  • New to insulin
  • Carbohydrate groups for T1DM and T2DM
  • Diabetes foot team traffic light guidance
  • Pregnancy and preconception care
  • Telephone advice by diabetes specialist nurses for secondary care patients and health care professionals
  • Pump education (interest groups and ongoing education)

The West Suffolk Hospital diabetes team provides the following clinics:

  • General diabetes clinics at West Suffolk Hospital, Newmarket Hospital and Sudbury Community Health Centre
  • Diabetes specialist nurse conducting mentored clinics in GP surgeries to review complex patients with diabetes
  • Personal insulin pump service
  • Diabetes foot team service
  • Joint diabetes and renal clinic
  • Pre-pregnancy clinic
  • Medical obstetric clinic
  • Transitional clinic for 17-19 year olds
