We are currently seeing an increase in norovirus (winter vomiting bug) at West Suffolk Hospital. To keep everyone safe, please delay your visit if you have flu-like symptoms, Covid-19 or influenza, or if you have had diarrhoea or vomiting in the last 48 hours.

Medical Treatment Unit

The Medical Treatment Unit (MTU) caters for adult patients referred from any speciality, attending for treatment, procedures or investigations that do not require an overnight stay.

Services we provide

We care for patients having a range of tests, procedures and treatments, including:

  • Pain relief procedures (pain interventions)
  • Liver biopsies
  • Vascular angioplasty
  • Hormone and metabolic tests, such as synacthen tests and glucose tolerance tests
  • Infusions for long-term conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease

While you’re in the unit:

  • You may be seen by a specialist nurse
  • Doctors are not based in the unit but can be contacted if needed
  • Our team includes trained nurses, carers and a ward clerk
