Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women in the UK, with about one in seven being diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. The NHS therefore provides a free screening programme which aims to detect cancer early, when treatment is likely to be more successful.
We invite women registered with a GP for routine breast screening every three years, starting at age 50 and continuing up to their 71st birthday. The first invitation is usually sent before a woman’s 51st birthday, but it could be anytime up to age 53, depending on the location of our mobile screening units. Women aged 71 or over may self-refer every three years for continued screening. Since age is a factor in breast cancer, you are welcome to keep up with regular screening.
Routine screening is mainly offered at one of our mobile sites and involves an x-ray of the breasts, called a mammogram. The mobile site you’re invited to is usually the one nearest to your GP surgery, unless your next screening is due before the mobile unit reaches your area. If needed, we can usually change your appointment date, time or screening location to something more convenient for you.
Mobile 1
Bury St Edmunds (February to November), Woolpit (December to January). Extended appointments are available at the Breast Imaging unit at West Suffolk Hospital for those with supported needs.
Mobile 2
Mobile unit 2 visits Haverhill, Mildenhall, Newmarket, Thetford, Rickinghall and Sudbury once a year. This unit has a lift for patients with mobility difficulties or in a wheelchair.
Assessment
Most women will receive a letter confirming that their mammogram is normal. However, some may be asked to return for further assessment at the Breast Imaging unit at West Suffolk Hospital. During this time, our specialist breast care nurses are available to provide support and address any questions or concerns.
