About the event
West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust is inviting women aged 50 and over to a breast screening open day in Bury St Edmunds on Tuesday 27 October 2026, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The event is designed to make breast screening more accessible to women who may face barriers to attending routine appointments.
The mobile breast screening unit will be open at Glasswells car park from 10am to 2pm. Women can meet the breast screening team, find out more about the service and, if eligible, have their breast screening on the day, subject to availability.
Women who are nervous or unsure about having a mammogram are also very welcome. You can visit the mobile unit, look at the equipment and talk to members of the screening team in an informal and supportive environment. You do not have to have a mammogram if you visit.
Who is the open day for?
The open day is particularly aimed at women who may face barriers to accessing breast screening, including:
- women experiencing homelessness
- women living in a women's refuge or temporary accommodation
- women who find it difficult to attend healthcare appointments
- women who may be less likely to access routine healthcare
- women who feel nervous or have concerns about breast screening
What can I do at the open day?
Visitors can:
- meet the breast screening team
- look inside the mobile screening unit
- see the equipment used for mammography
- ask questions and discuss any concerns
- find out what happens during a breast screening appointment
- talk to staff about any barriers or concerns about accessing screening
- have their breast screening on the day, if eligible and subject to availability
The team is committed to providing a welcoming, respectful and supportive service. We understand that everyone has different circumstances and experiences.
About breast screening
Breast screening uses mammograms, which are X-rays of the breast, to look for early signs of breast cancer. Screening can find changes before they cause any symptoms.
Women are routinely invited for breast screening every three years from the age of 50 until their 71st birthday. After the age of 71, women can continue to have breast screening every three years by contacting the screening service to make an appointment.
