Ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeons are trained in the management of conditions of the head and neck and upper aerodigestive tract. The problems in these areas can have a profound effect on quality of life and in some cases can be life threatening.
The ENT department is multi-site based and offers face to face and virtual consultations for cancer, urgent and routine surgical intervention at the following sites:

Our aim is to treat patients with skill, confidentiality, compassion and understanding.
We provide a comprehensive ENT service which means we can treat problems related to the ear, nose and throat, in addition to cancers of the aerodigestive tract, phono-surgery, thyroid and parotid disease and facial plastic surgery.
We work closely with our colleagues in radiotherapy, oncology, paediatrics, speech and language therapy, anaesthetics, ophthalmology and dermatology.

Consultants
Mr Millington is the ENT Department’s Clinical Lead and Educational Supervisor for East of England regional trainees. He undertook his medical training at Imperial London, followed by working in Dorset, Australia and around the East of England.
He completed his ENT training with a paediatric fellowship at Addenbrookes and joined the West Suffolk Hospital in 2021. Mr Millington specialises in Head and Neck and Paediatric ENT surgery.

Mr Martinez Del Pero is the Clinical Director for Surgery and joined West Suffolk Hospital as an ENT consultant in 2015. He completed a medical doctorate in clinical assessment of ANCA-associated vasculitis at Cambridge and did higher surgical training in East Anglia, following undergraduate and basic surgical training in South and East Yorkshire.
Mr Martinez Del Pero’s subspecialty interest is head and neck and airway conditions, and also manages general ENT complaints. He has a special interest in vasculitis and runs a clinic in a multidisciplinary team setting at Addenbrooke’s hospital, Cambridge.

Ms Kaleva qualified from the University of Oxford in 2012. She undertook her foundation training at Guy's and St Thomas' in London and the William Harvey Hospital in Kent. She completed her core and higher surgical training in the East of England region. During this time, she also developed a strong interest in undergraduate and post-graduate education completing a post-graduate certificate in Medical Education at the University of Bedfordshire.
She undertook a 12-month fellowship in Otology and Hearing Implants at Addenbrookes' Hospital in Cambridge followed by a 6-month fellowship in Paediatric ENT fellowship with a focus on complex airways, also at Addenbrookes' Hospital in Cambridge. Ms Kaleva specialises in Otological problems such as hearing loss and cholesteatoma, as well as balance disorders such as BPPV and Meniere's disease. She also specialises in Paediatric ENT Surgery with a focus on addressing the full range of ENT presentations affecting children with a goal of delivering wholistic care and joined West Suffolk Hospital in 2025.

Mrs Truman is a surgeon-scientist who has worked in the UK and completed her post-doctoral studies at Yale University, USA. She joined West Suffolk Hospital in 2017 as a general ENT surgeon, with a special interest in translational immunology.

Mr Fahmy qualified from Alexandria School of Medicine, Egypt in 1986. After completing basic surgical training in Egypt, he moved to the UK in 1994 and whilst working as a senior house officer, he passed the FRCS exams and was elected as a fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons in 1995. He completed his second fellowship FRCS(ORL-HNS) in 2005. After completing his consultant training in 2004, he was appointed to a consultant post at the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds and Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.
He developed a special interest in surgical management of external and middle ear problems such as chronic otitis media and cholesteatoma. Mr Fahmy has published and lectured widely on various aspects of otolaryngology. He also has a specialist interest in nasal surgery which included surgical treatment of nasal obstruction, endoscopic sinus surgery and correction of nasal deformity (rhinoplasty).

Mr McKiernan read Medicine at University College in London and after stints in neurosurgery, orthopaedics and plastic surgery became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgery in London. His specialist training was completed on the London rotation and included overseas Fellowships in France and Germany. He is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery and was appointed as a Consultant Surgeon to Addenbrookes Hospital and the West Suffolk Hospital in 2003 with a subspecialist interest in rhinology and facial plastic surgery.
He is certified in cosmetic surgery of the nose and ear by the Intercollegiate Board of Cosmetic Surgery and an active trainer. He has published papers and lectured widely and has diverse outside interests. He is married with two children.

Mr Kamel is a specialist Voice and general adult ENT surgeon. He joined the department in 2010. He covers all general aspects of ENT speciality, having experience in ENT both overseas and the UK. He leads the Voice Clinic together with experienced speech therapists. He is a consultant member of the British Laryngological Association.

Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACP)
Ms Helen Woodley joined the ENT department in 2017, from a background of surgical nursing. She completed her MSc in Advanced Practice in 2020 and now is one of the Department’s Advanced Care Practitioners, and a valued member of the team. She has a great deal of knowledge and experience in managing different ENT conditions and has a particular interest in otology.

Ms Peredo joined the ENT department in 2019. She has training and experience treating a wide spectrum of ENT conditions. She has also completed a master’s in advanced clinical Practice in 2023, working as an ENT Advanced Care Practitioner.

Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)
The Head and Neck CNS team at West Suffolk cover aspects of Head & Neck and Thyroid Cancer, supporting patients along their diagnostic journey and through their diagnosis. We also cover all aspects of Tracheostomy and Laryngectomy care, supporting this patient group as inpatients in our ward settings and supporting the various clinical teams. We also support the St Nicholas Hospice team and run regular training days as well as ad hoc training sessions in clinical areas. The team is made up of 2 Head and Neck Clinical Nurse Specialists: Mr Andrew Mizen and Ms Edelisa Almeida.
Ms Edelisa Almeida joined the Head and Neck team in 2024 as one of our Clinical Nurse Specialists. She has been a nurse for over 10 years after completing her training in Portugal and has spent the majority of her career as a Critical Care Nurse. In her free time, she enjoys anything related to music or nature.

Mr Andy Mizen joined West Suffolk Hospital in 1996 as a nursing assistant and from there studied at Birmingham City University to complete nurse training. On qualification in the summer of 2000, he returned to West Suffolk Hospital and have been here ever since.
Andy has worked across General Medicine, Intensive Care and for the past seven years, ENT. During that time, he completed his BSc (Hons) in Nursing Practice with Specialist Practice. Andy has been a Head and Neck Clinical Nurse Specialist with the ENT team since
