Residents, patients, carers and staff are encouraged to help shape the future of local healthcare by nominating themselves to stand in the election for the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust's (WSFT) Council of Governors.
Until Tuesday, 6 October, community members are encouraged to put themselves forward for nomination to become a governor and play a vital role in ensuring the Trust is accountable to the people it serves. Representing the views of patients, staff and the wider community, governors ensure these voices are considered in decisions which affect local NHS services.
The Council of Governors work alongside the Trust's leadership team and Board, getting involved in important projects and exciting developments and helping influence the Trust's long-term strategic direction. New governors can expect to help implement the Trust’s strategy, see the beginning of the construction of the new West Suffolk Hospital, and the ongoing implementation of the Government’s 10-Year Health Plan for England.
Public governor, Sarah Hanratty said: “My role as a governor means I have the responsibility of representing the views of my community, which as a local NHS service user is something I find incredibly rewarding. I am also able to hold the Board to account, and I contribute to discussions around how our services are delivered.
“The last three years have been very insightful and full of transformative changes which have seen great improvements in our Trust’s performance. I would encourage anyone with an interest in their local health services to get involved.”
Chair of WSFT Jude Chin said: “Governors bring valuable perspectives and are a link between the Trust and its communities. If you think you aren’t represented in our decision-making processes, you are exactly who we need to influence and impact the choices we make about our services.”
Anyone who is a Trust member is eligible to stand for election; no specific qualifications are required to become a governor. The Trust is looking for people over 16 years who are enthusiastic, interested in local health services and want to represent the views of others. Full training, induction and ongoing development opportunities are provided. The voluntary role requires a commitment of around six hours a month, which may include evenings, and reasonable expenses will be covered, such as travel.

The deadline for nominations is 5pm on Tuesday, 6 October, voting for the election opens on Wednesday, 28 October, and closes at 5pm on Friday, 20 November.
