Services available at the Library
Enquiry Desk Service
The Library runs an enquiry service which you can access either by visiting the library, telephoning us or emailing us. We can help with all your information needs such as: literature searches, accessing/searching/ordering journal articles and locating/ordering books. You can also return, renew, checkout or reserve books. We can also help with certain IT problems such as: setting up wireless access and help with logging in to our computers. In addition we have several Laptops and Projectors available to borrow for free and they can be booked in advance. For those of you who drop in and see us we also have free pens and free sweets, plus we sell book tokens, stamps, memory sticks. We also have a coffee machine and we sell biscuits/tea/coffee at very reasonable prices. Finally we also offer photocopier/scanning services, binding for dissertations and other documents and we can proofread documents within reason.

Arrangement of Books and Pamphlets
You can find where items are located by looking in the Subject Index, copies available at the issue desk, or ask the Librarians for assistance. We also have a computer available in the library set up to search our stock of books.
Up to six books may be borrowed for up to four weeks after which they must be returned or renewed, for a maximum of 3 times. A renewal slip may be filled in if library staff are not available to restamp the books. The borrower is responsible for books borrowed and any losses must be reported to the librarian who will arrange for an invoice for the replacement cost to be issued. Books must not be transferred from one borrower to another.
A number of heavily used books are available for a loan period of one week at a time. They are arranged in alphabetical author order.
Books already on loan may be reserved. They will normally be held for the reader for two weeks after which they will be returned to the shelf.
Return of Books
When books are returned they should either be put in the book return box or given to library staff to be discharged. Book return boxes are located outside the Library and in the Time Out restaurant
The library is a member of the British Library, BMA and the Eastern Document Exchange Network (EDEN). If the item can only be obtained from the British Library a charge of £7.00 per article and £10.00 per book is made to cover the cost. You must complete a Request for interlibrary loan/photocopy form for each item requested; copies of this form are also available in the library.
Book Purchase Service
If you wish to buy any type of book, the library has links with Waterstones in Cambridge. No postage is charged and the service is very quick and efficient. Please fill in a book purchase form with as many details as possible
Loan of Equipment
Laptop computers with Powerpoint (Microsoft Office 2010 Version) on them are available for loan if users wish to illustrate presentations. Portable projectors for use with laptops are also available. Please note - users will be responsible if any of this equipment is borrowed. Damage, loss or breakages must be paid for.
A photocopier is available for the reproduction of articles and material available in the library. Anyone wishing to use the photocopier can purchase a card to the value of £0.50, £1.00 or £2.50. Departmental cards are available on request. CLA copyright laws must be followed (see poster next to photocopier).
Internet & E-Mail Facilities
26 Computers equipped with Microsoft Office 2010 and with access to the internet and medical databases are available in the Library's computer rooms. If you live in the hospital accommodation and would like to download our WiFi access registration form please click here. We cannot accept electronic submissions so please bring any completed forms to the Library.
The Library offers free literature search training to all members in groups of up to 8 people, either within the Library or at a location to suit you, for example in your department/ward/GP surgery etc. Please contact Library staff for next available training dates.
