Welcome to the Cellular Pathology Department

The Cellular Pathology Department is part of the Pathology Department and provides both histological and non-gynaecological cytology diagnostic services.

Histopathology involves the examination of biopsies or surgical specimens, whereas non-gynaecological cytology involves the examination of cells obtained from body fluids including urine, sputum or needle aspirates from masses.

Although a large proportion of the work of the Cellular Pathology Laboratory is associated with the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer, diseases resulting from benign growths, inflammation and infectious agents are also evaluated.

The samples sent to Cellular Pathology are examined both visually and microcopically to determine the diagnosis. The pathologists present their findings to clinicians and radiologists, as part of a multidisciplinary team, to discuss the best course of treatment for the patient.

The Cellular Pathology Department also manages the Mortuary, which provides services for the hospital as well as the St. Edmundsbury Coroner.

The Department has full accreditation with CPA, Clinical Pathology Accreditation and aims to provide a superior quality and timely diagnostic and advisory service to patients in the Trust and local community.

Gynaecological Cytology Services, which screen cervical smears taken as part of the NHS Cervical Screening Program, are centralized at Newmarket.
